A vehicle's engine requires oxygen to allow it to operate and this air needs to be cleaned (with the use of air filters) before entering the engine, to stop debris, dust and pollen, causing damage to the sensitive internal components. 

The air filter is located inside a sealed box, in the engine bay, to ensure the only air entering into the engine is free from these damaging particles. This filter must be changed at recommended intervals, to make sure it is operating at its peak.

If the air filter is not replaced regularly it will put additional strain on the engine, allowing contaminants enter the intake, fuel injectors and spark plugs. When this happens a vehicle will have lower gas mileage and poor performance.

A second air filter is located in the air conditioning and heating air intake, called the cabin air filter.

This filter is fitted inside the air conditioning system, to filter out dirt, dust and pollen from the air entering into the cabin. The cabin air filter also stops exhaust odors from working their way into your vehicle. 

The cabin air filter can also clog up over time increasing allergens and causing a musty smell in the air conditioning system, so it will need to be replaced at recommended intervals.
